When you hear the word "psychic," chances are you’re thinking of stuffing crystals in pockets and bras, tarot cards, and people who predict the future (who are mostly wrong, by the way.)
But what if I told you (and I am) that the very idea of psychic ability is broader and far more ordinary than pop culture lets on? And here’s the kicker: everyone has it—including you. That’s right, you.
I’m not saying you have to call yourself Miss Cleo and wander around with your head in clouds of stinky incense, but why not awaken and amplify a normal human ability that makes life easier?
Sound like bullshit? Good. We’re diving into the oft avoided territory of what being "psychic" actually means, and why so many of us deny or misunderstand it.
Psychic Abilities Aren’t Reserved for a Select Few
We tend to think of psychic abilities as some rare superpower, something people either have or don’t. Yet, what if psychic ability wasn’t some elite trait but rather an innate part of our wiring, accessible to everyone?
Many of us experience subtle nudges—whether it’s an unexplainable gut feeling, a “bad vibe” from someone, or knowing who’s calling before you look at the phone. These are all everyday psychic abilities that don’t require fortune-telling, mystical theatrics, or a single shenanigan.
Most of us brush these sensations aside, rationalizing them as mere coincidences. We’re taught to dismiss what can’t be explained by traditional logic, but that narrow view might be cutting us off from one of our most profound capabilities.
How About We Start Reframing “Psychic” as Heightened Awareness
Let’s redefine what being psychic means. In simple terms, it’s an ability to tune into information that isn’t immediately accessible through our five senses. Think of it as an enhanced awareness of subtle energies and information that can guide us if we’re willing to listen.
Imagine standing in a room with music playing softly in the background. Some people hear the music immediately, while others are so absorbed in their own thoughts they don’t notice it at all. Psychic ability is similar; some people may naturally have an ear tuned to that background "music," but with practice, anyone can start to hear it. Literally anyone!
Another example I like to use is being at a party and only hearing the person you’re talking to until suddenly you hear your name spoken in a far corner, and now you’re tuned into a completely different stream of information. That stream was always present, but you couldn’t hear it until your name was spoken. Make sense?
Common Psychic Abilities You Probably Already Use but Call Them Something Else
The word “psychic” conjures up a lot of silliness and shady characters for most of us, but let’s break it down into more familiar terms.
Think about these:
1. Intuition – Ever have a gut feeling about something that turned out to be right? Intuition is one of the most common forms of psychic ability. It’s our internal radar, with emphasis on internal, offering us information before our conscious mind has a chance to analyze it.
2. Empathy – Do you pick up on other people’s emotions without them saying a word? Empathy is a form of psychic connection where we can feel the emotional state of others, even from afar. Sit down next to someone on the bus, and without even trying, you get a sense of their emotional state.
Maybe that’s micro-expressions, but since most of us are trying very hard not to look at faces on public transportation, I think we can rule this out.
3. Knowing without knowing how you know – This is when you just “know” something without having any logical explanation for why you know it. It might be a strong sense of certainty about a situation, person, or outcome. We tend to call it catching a vibe, and it is! But we can learn how to perceive vibes on purpose.
4. Synchronicities and "Coincidences" – Have you ever thought about someone only to have them text you? Or found that something you were just talking about comes up in conversation again and again? These “coincidences” can be signals of heightened awareness, being in a flow state but not just while in the shower getting ideas, aka “downloads.”
5. Dream Messages – Do you get insights in your dreams that feel profound or predictive? Dreams are often a gateway to accessing information from our unconscious mind, which is more sensitive to psychic impressions than our waking self.
Why Most People Don’t Believe They’re Psychic
Despite experiencing these everyday psychic abilities, most people deny having any "psychic" potential. Why? Because we've been conditioned to mistrust and devalue anything that doesn't fit within a conventional framework of “hard evidence” and “proof.”
We’re trained to prioritize logic over gut feelings and intellect over intuition, and maybe we have collective unconscious trauma about being turned into a crispy fried human kabob for being special or odd at certain points in history.
Society has spent centuries downplaying intuition and dismissing psychic phenomena as mere fantasy. In the era of the Enlightenment, intuitive and psychic abilities were seen as irrational, even dangerous (still are dangerous according to some religions.)
Logic and reason became the only respected forms of intelligence. This mindset still permeates our culture today, encouraging us to ignore or downplay our intuitive hunches and gut feelings.
And just for a moment, maybe consider if it might serve those with power to disempower the masses from getting and trusting their own truth. How many generations did it take to turn people from their most reliable sources of truth? Unfortunately, not too many, especially since some pretty brutal tactics were employed to shut people up.
It doesn’t help that psychic abilities have also been sensationalized in the media. Rather than embracing intuition as an accessible skill, Hollywood has painted psychics as fortune tellers, spirit mediums, and often as charlatans.
This distorted image discourages people from exploring their own abilities because they assume it’s all just make-believe and don’t want to be seen as a freak or dismissed as a flake.
Opening Up to Your Psychic Potential
The good news? You don’t need to have dramatic visions or perform telepathy to start tapping into your innate psychic potential. All it takes is a willingness to listen and trust the information that comes from your own awareness.
Here are a few ways to start embracing your psychic side:
1. Practice Self-Trust – The next time you have a gut feeling, rather than rationalizing it away, take a moment to consider it. Instead of dismissing it, ask yourself, “What might this feeling be trying to tell me?”
2. Meditate and Quiet Your Mind – Intuitive information often comes in whispers. Meditation helps you tune out the mental noise that can drown out intuitive guidance.
3. Write It Down – Keep a journal of your intuitive hits and any “coincidences” that feel meaningful. Tracking these experiences over time helps you see patterns and reinforces that they’re not random.
4. Stay Open and Curious – Try experimenting with empathy by paying closer attention to people’s moods without needing verbal cues. Practice noticing how people make you feel energetically—do you feel calm, anxious, or uplifted around them? Trust those impressions as real and valid information.
5. Synchronicity – Notice if certain symbols, words, or numbers keep popping up. Instead of dismissing them as meaningless, consider that they might hold a personal message for you.
The Real Benefit of Tapping into Your Psychic Abilities or Why Bother Being That Weirdo.
Opening up to your psychic potential isn’t just about novelty or party tricks (it should never be about party tricks!) It’s about building a stronger, more intuitive relationship with yourself and the world around you.
When you tune into your intuition, you start making decisions from a place of personal empowerment, rather than fear or second-guessing or falling prey to the astoundingly awful sources of information surrounding and shouting at us constantly.
You begin to cultivate self-trust and confidence, which, let’s face it, is a kind of superpower in itself.
In a world where we're constantly bombarded with information and opinions, trusting your intuition helps you cut through the garbage noise and focus on what truly resonates.
You’ll find yourself less swayed by external influences and more grounded in your own experience and knowledge.
Your Psychic Self Is Waiting
Here’s my point of view: Psychic ability isn’t about seeing the future or reading minds. It’s not about winning lottery numbers or solving cold murder cases.
It’s about listening—listening to the subtler parts of your awareness that can offer guidance, insight, and even protection. And since everyone has these abilities, it’s simply a matter of recognizing them for what they are.
Psychic abilities aren’t magical powers possessed by the few; they’re a natural part of being human. They’re tools to help you navigate life more consciously and intuitively. So, the next time you feel a hunch or sense something that doesn’t have a logical explanation, consider this: maybe you’re just tapping into the part of you that’s always been psychic.
Would that really be so bad?
